Designing a Career

My first course of action as a Graphic Designer is to label, brand, and promote myself. What better way to start up in the industry? It gives me an opportunity to test out marketing and branding theories, and really develop my sense of “graphic design” self.

Defining a style is harder than it sounds. So much of what I do is bits and pieces of things that I love, and occasionally it makes me feel like a copy cat. I’ve come to find out that… actually… this is what the design business is all about. We take bits and pieces of inspiration, color, patterns, and imagination and combine them all into a work of art. While typically only 2D, I find that websites add a dimension of interactivity to art. When was the last time you interacted with an oil painting? That sounds pretty messy to me.

Launching a new career is difficult, no doubt about it. To the question of “why this?” here is my answer: I’ve always loved art, designing things, organizing things, and teaching. Web design offers a way for me to combine all of these. Not only am I creating artwork and displaying it… but it’s fully functional, and when designed correctly can provide a wealth of knowledge. I’m one for grassroots, and open sharing of information. So get ready because I’ll be throwing plenty at you.
